variable speed air handlers
The center of the universe when it comes to home comfort
You may or may not know that the air handler located in your attic or garage controls not only your cooling but also the airflow throughout your home.
Most people think that their air handler produces only cooling, but did you know that contained within that component is the fan and blower assembly that moves the air around?
Why is this important? Because some amazing advances have taken place in the past five years to improve the efficiency, sound and performance of these air handlers. Specifically, it is due to the advancement of Variable Speed.
Simply put, an air handler with a Variable Speed fan is the most important component of the complete indoor comfort system! It is the hub of the comfort wheel - all the other products that allow us to build your indoor comfort system revolve around the variable speed methodology.
What is Variable Speed? How does it differentiate from Single Speed? What are the tangible benefits of Variable Speed not only to airflow and temperature, but also for Indoor Air Quality?
Consider that most homes, be they tract or custom, contain air handlers with Single Speed fan technology. You are probably quite aware of the sound and feeling in your home when your air handler starts up. The initial loud "bang" of the motor is followed by the typical noise of a device that knows only one speed - FULL THROTTLE!
This antiquated Single Speed operation is "all or nothing" - your air handler is either OFF (when the temperature has been satisfied) or ON (when the temperature goes above or below set point).
There is simply no in-between speed.
Think about how you drive your car. You don't race your car from stoplight to stoplight. You gently accelerate and gently brake in between starts and stops. The Variable Speed fan operates much like your automobile. Think about it - the transmission in your car is either a four or five speed type. You would never have a single-gear transmission in your car or you wouldn't get very far.
The motor in a Variable Speed air handler is designed to convert 110-volt AC power to DC power. This results in a tremendous savings in electricity (see graphic above for details). But the biggest difference is how you feel in your home. There are no hot and cold spots. In the summer months, the Variable Speed operation helps to "dehumidify" the home, by wringing out the moisture like a sponge. The sound output is significantly less than the standard air handler, up to 24 times quieter depending upon the model.
Variable Speed technology also makes any of our Indoor Air Quality products work better. For example, the Electronic Air Cleaner operates more efficiently when the fan is on in partial load. You can literally run the air cleaner on a 24/7 basis, for minimal cost. The same is true with the Ultraviolet Air Purifier. Taking advantage of that Variable Speed fan, the air purifier has a much higher kill ratio when the air is gently moving through the system.
We can describe the benefits to you, but you must experience them for yourself. And you will feel the difference the very first time.
